As a chiropractor and acupuncturist I have had the incredible experience of watching people transform and heal themselves through integrative medicine: nutrition, spinal alignment, fitness, bodywork, acupuncture and acupressure. Traditional Chinese Medicine in the form of acupuncture has been around for 5,000 years with 600 points that lie along energy lines or pathways in the body called meridians. It is thought that disease occurs when these pathways become imbalanced due to trauma, toxins, weather related changes, stress or negative thoughts. When acupuncture points are stimulated it re-balances the energy flow or chi through the meridian therefore restoring proper nerve signaling, circulation, anti-inflammatory chemicals, hormone production and ultimately health.
The wonderful news is, you can perform acupressure on these points for daily self-care and vitality! The following points are some of my favorite foundational acupressure points for health, energy, pain relief and vitality as well as instruction on how to stimulate them:
Shen Men: Found in the triangular fossa of the ear. This point translates to “The Gate of Heaven” and is used to help with stress, fear, regulate the sympathetic nervous system, anxiety, depression, enhances sleep, elevates energy, helps balance hormones, elevates mood and helps treat any pain/inflammatory process in the body. For acupressure press 10 to 20 seconds with a Q-tip while practicing deep abdominal breathing. It is also vital to know that your ear is a microsystem to every bone, joint, organ and tissue structure in the body and contains reflexes for each of these structures. Massage your ears morning and night to stimulate these reflex points for proper energy circulation to your body.
Other daily self-care acupressure points:
GV 20: Found directly in the center of the middle of the top of the head. This point is where all meridians meet so balances the entire energy of the body, basically look at it as a natural energy shot! Helps headaches, brain fog, increases clarity and memory.
Li 4: Located on the web of your hand between your pointer finger and thumb. The master analgesic point, this is the primary point to treat any pain or inflammatory condition in the body. A natural aspirin remedy for headaches, helps with glowing skin and hormone balance.
Sp 6: Located four lengths from your inner ankle bone on the mid-line of your lower leg. Every woman should know this point! This is the master hormone point in the body! Use it to help alleviate PMS symptoms, pain with cramps, helps induce labor as it relaxes the uterus and decreases menopausal symptoms with hot flashes. Helps with insomnia, helps elevate energy, any skin disease, hyperthyroidism, infertility.
Stimulate these points morning and night for 20 seconds with moderate pressure for a daily self-care ritual and watch your health positively transform!
